Arts Centre Tram Cafe

BKK Architects were commissioned to prepare a concept design for a semi-permanent Tram-Bar-Cafe within the forecourt of the Arts Centre, Melbourne. An important civic space within Melbourne’s Arts Precinct, the forecourt area is particularly active during festival times when it hosts a temporary Speigeltent. The design approach sought to capitalize on the sense of fun and carnivalesque associated with the space while incorporating the installation of a W Class Tram. The proposal consisted primarily of a coloured fibreglass canopy structure in the form of a cluster of balloons, providing a unifying roof to link the proposed café, tram and existing podium areas underneath.
