The Huashen Scientific Research & Development project is a collaboration between BKK Architects and Brearley Architects & Urbanists. The brief called for a major new mixed-use development of 140,000 square metres in an emerging technology precinct of Nanjing, China. The complex was to provide commercial research and development facilities for corporate tenants as well as a range of support service, retail, and recreational functions. The concept design sought to create an urban complexity by clustering buildings upon the site to create a range of spatial experiences and places for people to meet and interact. Conceived as a fragment or microcosm of the city itself, the design sought to conflate the distinction between podium and tower that typically characterizes such developments. A flexible façade system was developed to respond specifically to local conditions and individually articulate the various parts of the overall development.
