Monash Parkville Courtyard

The Parkville Courtyard Refurbishment involved the renewal of a narrow and tall space between two multistorey buildings affected by periodically windy conditions and limited solar access.  New platform seating along the southern edge of the space encourages a range of social and individual occupation modes, and makes the most of the sun that does reach the courtyard. The platform seating and vertical elements on the periphery of the space create a graduated increase in elevation.

The predominantly timber materiality also acts to create a hospitable and tactile experience, which serves to activate an important outdoor space for students and staff to socialise, learn and relax. The new Courtyard accommodates a range of use patterns, activating the space and providing a significant addition to the culture and experience of Monash University’s Parkville campus.
