The invited competition was to design a new flagship gallery for Monash University. Located within an existing 1960’s curtain-wall building, MUMA is to announce its presence to the public, promoting the gallery and the larger University it represents. The dynamic new structure is intended to provide a signature entry by carving a portal through the middle of the existing building. BKK’s approach to the design of MUMA is one of integrated intervention. The simple geometry and formal language of the existing building is distorted into a complex crystalline structure. This is an architecture of operation, a form of installation, where the architecture is informed by less structured paths and multiple possibilities.
