Valued as the largest public-private transport development in Australasia, the project features a 6.5-kilometre tunnel and sets a global benchmark as the world’s first major road infrastructure project founded on the principles of the International Indigenous Design Charter. Developed in close consultation with the Wurundjeri Woi-Wurrung people, BKK’s winning scheme treats the massive transport corridor as an urban renewal opportunity. The design seamlessly integrates large-scale sustainability, such as noise walls clad in photovoltaic cells that generate their own power, with significant ecological repair, creating expansive land bridges, revitalised wetlands, and extensive pedestrian trails that stitch local communities back together.
