Practising what we preach: BKK Sustainability Action Plan

Let’s face it. As architects, we have opportunities and responsibilities to address emissions from the built environment, not compound them.

Like many other practices, BKK are signatories to Australian Architects Declare.

It’s easy to sign the pledge, but genuinely living up to the 10 Architects Declare principles is far more demanding. However, it’s something we’re deeply committed to.

Our sustainability action plan maps our journey towards delivering on all 10 principles and then aiming beyond sustainability towards regeneration.

It sets clear goals for 2023, 2025 and 2030, both for our projects and our workplace.

These goals are in 6 areas:

  • Operational (our business and workplace)
  • Re-use and adapt existing buildings/materials
  • Create net-zero operational carbon buildings
  • Reduce embodied carbon
  • Exceed minimum building performance targets
  • Measure whole-of-life carbon

In short, our Sustainability Action Plan maps out how we’ll practise what we preach.

BKK’s Sustainability Working Group has researched and developed our Action Plan. We’ve learned an immense amount in the process, and we’re implementing it already.
