Monash University Sports Precinct Masterplan
Monash’s extensive Clayton campus sporting fields are a huge drawcard for staff and students.
However, they occupy a large area of the campus. Monash aspired to add significantly to its student housing and to gain flexible spaces for functions such as corporate events, gala dinners and large exams.
Therefore BKK, with sports and recreation consultants Simon Leisure, were commissioned to masterplan the sports precinct to:
- investigate siting student housing there
- maintain the sporting assets
- adapt the existing indoor-sport facilities for more versatile uses.
The sports precinct topography slopes significantly from the campus heart down to the eastern border along Blackburn Road (a major arterial).
A fundamental move in our masterplan is to flatten the slope by elevating the sports fields then placing new buildings underneath.
Another move is to redevelop existing indoor sport facilities, creating large-span spaces appropriate for functions and exams and stacking student accommodation on top, with long views over the sports fields.
