The Swan Street Bridge provides a vital connection, linking Melbourne’s CBD with its world-renowned sporting and recreation precincts. Congestion has become a significant concern and along with the increasing the vehicular capacity of the bridge, VicRoads have identified the Swan Street Bridge Upgrade as a significant opportunity to improve the pedestrian and cycling infrastructure, and to enhance the urban design quality of the bridge and its immediate surrounds.
Recognising this, this design proposal draws on the engineering and architectural qualities of the area, as well as the sporting and cultural history particular to this part of the river.
The design seeks to enhance the user experience, including pedestrians, cyclists and motorists, while respectfully engaging with the formal expression of the existing bridge and surrounding built environment. The design provides for a highly functional river crossing, with streamlined circulation paths that operate under both daily and highly congested event conditions. However, in order to comprehensively address the urban design recommendations provided, and the characteristics of the site itself, the proposed structure has been carefully stitched into the bridge embankments, creating four landings.
