Monash Building H Basement

Projects

This project involved the basement foyer of Building H on Monash’s Caulfield Campus.

The foyer services four lecture theatres, office and syndicate rooms for the Monash Postgraduate Association, a café and various plant rooms.

However, apart from being a circulation zone, the foyer was underused. We fitted it out as a more enticing breakout zone and exhibition space.

Our key moves included:

  • introducing warm, welcoming lighting suitable for exhibiting artworks
  • using material and colour to unify its zones, including entrances
  • introducing flexible, robust and interesting furniture and acoustic attenuation.

Building H houses the Faculty of Information Technology and the departments of Accounting and Finance, Econometrics and Business Statistics, and Economics. This means there were multiple school stakeholders to consult and a range of user cohorts.

The project had a tight budget was and constructed in a live environment while the multi-storey building above and around it operated.
